White Oryx in Ancient Egypt

Abstract

The Oryx is a desert antelope of the Cow family, known in ancient Egypt as mA HD. The Oryx was associated with the god Set in the sixteenth nome of Upper Egypt, and it was associated with the titles of the rulers of the sixteenth nome, which is located in El-Minya Governorate. Oryx was also associated with a number of deities, including the goddess Set, the god Bes, and it was associated with the god Soker; so the head of the Oryx appeared on top of the bow of the boat of tenderness to the god Soker. Oryx had been associated with the offering rituals in temples and it was depicted in many royal scenes in temples being slaughtered by Kings. It was also portrayed in many scenes being hunted by kings and individuals in temples and tombs, as well as being portrayed in scenes of animal sacrifices and on offering tables, and the Oryx was also depicted on magical panels for protection. Many amulets, dishes and seals that took the shape of the Oryx were found, and this confirms the importance of the Oryx in ancient Egypt, and this is what the research will work on proving in detail.
