The Role of Sustainable Transport in Enhancing the Competitiveness of the Egyptian Tourist Destination

Abstract

Research aims to assess the competitive situation of the Egyptian tourist destination, and to determine the role of sustainable transportation to enhance the competitiveness of the Egyptian tourist destination, in to analyzing the transportation strategy in Egypt from a tourism perspective. Results showed Egyptian sustainable transport strategy positively affects the competitiveness of tourist destination. Research also found a decline in the competitiveness of the Egyptian tourist destination from 64th place in 2009 to 85th place in 2014, and then progressed in the period from the 83rd place. Globally, it ranked 51st, the indicators of air, land and sea transport infrastructure showed compatibility with the indicators of the competitiveness of the tourist destination.Research results also showed that sustainable transport strategy in Egypt contributed to creating additional free time for tourists while they were in the tourist destination that could be employed in tourism activities, in addition to that ,the Egyptian transport projects and their diversity contribute to facing the phenomenon of seasonality through easy access to new tourist destinations. Research indicates that the most prominent weaknesses in the Egyptian transport strategy from a tourism perspective are: low level of efficiency in operating new projects, absence of charter airlines and low costs commensurate with the volume of developments that have taken place in the air transport infrastructure. Results of the research showed that the implementation of the Egyptian sustainable transport strategy provided many opportunities, including: Integration and diversity in transport projects provides an opportunity for the development and revitalisation of domestic tourism.
